Britain’s biggest chemical plant, the Olefins and Polymers facility at Grangemouth in Scotland, is under serious threat of closure due to rapidly rising energy prices and increased carbon taxes. The plant, run by Ineos, produces materials critical to hundreds of UK plastic-manufacturing businesses.
Stuart Collings, the plant manager, warned that unless there is a meaningful turnaround in the energy and tax climate within the next two years, the company may be forced to shut the complex. Ineos has reportedly been subsidizing the operation with profits from its global ventures to maintain viability, a strategy that may no longer be sustainable.
The potential closure would add to a string of recent industrial setbacks, including the shutdown of Grangemouth’s oil refinery earlier this year. Collectively, these closures have already resulted in the loss of hundreds of jobs and sputtered economic confidence in the region.
Ineos’s concerns echo a broader industry alarm over the UK’s competitive disadvantages, namely, high energy costs and taxing environmental regulations. Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the Ineos chairman, has previously warned that the UK chemicals industry is facing “extinction” unless policies shift to better support the sector.
