Almost all of the countries missed the UN deadline for the submission of updated climate targets, and experts stress the urgency of immediate policy updates as COP30 nears
Out of nearly 200 countries, just 10 adhered to the submission deadline.
Nearly 190 nations failed to submit their updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement on the deadline set by the United Nations (UN). Additionally, as of February 10, 2025, major emitters like China, India, and the European Union did not submit their updated climate plans, and only ten nations including the United States, Brazil, and the United Kingdom adhered to the deadline.
UN climate director Simon Stiell has called on countries to submit “first-rate” climate policies by September 2025, despite the missed deadline, emphasizing the importance of quality over promptness. His statement in a speech in Brazil was:
“Because these national plans are among the most important policy documents governments will produce this century, their quality should be the paramount consideration … Taking a bit more time to ensure these plans are first-rate makes sense, properly outlining how they will contribute to this effort [to tackle the climate crisis] and therefore what rewards they will reap.”
Also, the Paris Agreement mandates that countries adopt more robust emission reduction strategies by 2035 to keep global warming to 1.5°C over pre-industrial levels.
The failure to reach the deadline raises concerns among developing countries regarding the commitment of major greenhouse gas emitters to global climate action. Therefore the need for wealthier nations to take the lead is emphasized by developing countries, as they are the ones most at risk from climate change. In addition to that climate experts warn that delays might impede progress at COP30, which is scheduled for November 2025.
