Pakistan is set to receive a $1.2 billion oil financing facility from Saudi Arabia, with monthly disbursements of $100 million starting March 2025. This initiative aims to bolster Pakistan’s energy sector and strengthen its foreign exchange reserves.
This arrangement will continue until February 2026, providing a significant boost to Pakistan’s energy sector and foreign exchange reserves.
The resumption of the Saudi Oil Facility (SOF) comes at a crucial time for Pakistan, as the country has been striving to stabilize its economy and manage its balance of payments. The monthly inflow of $100 million will help alleviate pressure on Pakistan’s foreign exchange reserves, ensuring a steady supply of petroleum products to meet domestic demand.
In addition to the SOF, Pakistan has secured approximately $6 billion from international creditors in the first eight months (July-February) of the current fiscal year. This includes $1 billion from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) under the Extended Fund Facility (EFF) arrangement.
These financial inflows are expected to strengthen Pakistan’s economic position and support ongoing structural reforms.
The agreement with the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) to defer a $1.2 billion payment on oil imports by one year, signed in February 2025, has also contributed to easing Pakistan’s financial obligations.
This deferment has provided additional fiscal space for the government to address pressing economic challenges.
The combined effect of these financial arrangements underscores the importance of international partnerships in supporting Pakistan’s economic stability. The timely disbursement of the Saudi oil facility is expected to have a positive impact on the country’s energy sector, ensuring uninterrupted supply and contributing to overall economic growth.
