The U.S. imposition of a 20% tariff on Chinese chemicals offers India’s chemical industry a strategic advantage, potentially boosting exports and reshaping global trade dynamics, as highlighted by a Prabhudas Lilladher report
The United States’ recent imposition of a 20% tariff on chemical imports from China presents a significant opportunity for India’s chemical industry to expand its footprint in the U.S. market. A report by Prabhudas Lilladher highlights that with U.S. retaliatory tariffs on Indian chemical exports set at 10%, Indian exporters effectively enjoy a 10% cost advantage over their Chinese counterparts.
The U.S. is India’s largest importer of chemicals, accounting for 14% of the country’s total chemical exports. In the financial year 2022-23, India exported chemicals worth $3.85 billion to the U.S. Although there was a 26% decline in exports in FY24, the U.S. remained the top destination for Indian chemical products.
This scenario mirrors the 2018 U.S.-China trade war, during which India experienced a surge in exports to the U.S., increasing from $57 billion to $73 billion as American companies sought alternatives to Chinese suppliers. The current tariffs are expected to prompt a similar shift, with U.S. firms considering India a reliable alternative.
However, experts caution that China may redirect its chemical exports to non-U.S. markets, potentially leading to an influx of cheaper Chinese chemical products in countries like India. This could intensify competition in these markets, challenging Indian chemical manufacturers to maintain their domestic and international competitiveness.
In summary, the U.S. tariffs on Chinese chemicals present a significant growth opportunity for India’s chemical industry. By capitalizing on the cost advantage and increasing their presence in the U.S. market, Indian chemical exporters can strengthen their position globally. Nonetheless, they must remain vigilant about potential challenges arising from redirected Chinese exports to other markets.
