Pakistan has taken a significant step toward entering the global critical minerals value chain after the Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDC) confirmed the presence of lithium in formation water extracted from a high-temperature geothermal pilot well in Sindh. The discovery marks the first reported identification of lithium in Pakistan’s geothermal brines and could open new opportunities for the country’s mining, chemical, and clean energy sectors.
A Strategic Discovery
The lithium was identified through advanced geochemical analysis of produced formation water—naturally occurring saline water brought to the surface during oil and gas operations. According to OGDC, the lithium concentrations recorded are comparable to higher-grade geothermal brines currently being explored and developed in Europe and North America.
